Top 10 Ways to fit your Walks in with your kids as a Single Parent

October 30, 20245 min read

Last weekend I spent my weekend ferrying my kids to & fro to activities. My husband was away so I was parenting solo. It doesn’t happen often but when it does oh boy, my admiration for solo parents is absolutely through the roof & my does gratitude for my partner spikes (slightly 😉)

As a solo parent, finding time for self-care, like a daily walk, can feel next to impossible. I am not advocating that walk is self-care but it does clear my head and give me the focus I need.

So back to last weekend, it was a holiday weekend and I missed my walk on Saturday so I was determined to get out Sunday so that inevitably meant bringing the kids. A regular walk won’t cut it with my kids, I know when I suggest it, I will get an eye roll! So, I have to sell it, kids let’s go on an adventure, will we climb Bray Head? My son is a yes immediately and I bribe my daughter with “something” after our walk. We had a ball, it kept them occupied for 90 minutes & I got an amazing walk in.

It got me thinking, I know we all struggle with time but solo parents, literally how do you do it? I’m in awe! So I thought I’d put together 10 ways to sneak in a walk that fits around your busy life but in fairness that sounds VERY arsy so here’s

10 Ways to TRY and fit a Walk in as a SOLO Parent

Hopefully with a little creativity & let’s face it a lot of luck you can make it work! Walking is one of the best ways to clear your mind, refresh your energy & help your overall wellbeing.

1. Walk with a Purpose (a.k.a. Errands)

Turn your errands into a walk. Need to pick up a few groceries? Have a package to drop off? Leave the car at home if possible & walk to get what you need. It’s a simple way to get moving without adding extra time to your day.

2. Challenge Yourself

Set a goal for your steps each day or week. Use a pedometer or an app on your phone to track your progress. Having a specific target makes it easier to stay motivated & and seeing your steps add up is so satisfying! Join my Winter Walking Challenge and get your friends to join, increase the fun!

3. Make Use of Kids' Activities

Got a kid in dance class, sports, or an after-school program? Instead of sitting and waiting, use that time to take a walk around the area. You’re nearby if they need you, and it’s a great way to fit in some movement. They will not remember you didn’t stay & watch. They will be forever grateful for a happy parent.

4. Stroller Walks

If your kids are young enough for a stroller, make it part of your routine. It’s also a great way for them to get fresh air, and you get some time to breathe, clear your head, and move your body. Honestly, when my 2 were smaller I was never at home. Joining a parent group was another great thing I did. I am still friends with some of the parents from those groups.

5. Do Playground Laps

Headed to the playground? While the kids play, try doing laps around the play area. This lets you keep an eye on them while fitting in some steps. Plus, they’ll see you staying active, which is a great example to set. If you are nervous about this, get other parents involved you do a lap, they do a lap. I realise this can be totally out of your comfort zone but it could lead to new connections.

6. Take Calls on the Go

If you have work calls or catch-up chats that don’t require sitting at a desk, head outside and walk while you talk. This is especially helpful if you work from home - fresh air and a quick walk make for a nice break from your screen. I love taking my calls standing up, it keeps me focused as well as getting my steps in

7. Dance-Walk with the Kids

Put on some upbeat music and get the kids involved! Have a fun walk-dance party around the house or outside. This is a great option on busy days when it’s hard to squeeze in a full walk. Plus, it keeps the kids entertained! During the big P a disco was a regular thing in our house. We used to pick 3 songs each – 6 songs at least 20 minutes of dancing, it was great fun. Lol I do remember also getting my 10k steps in by walking from the front door to the back door, it took 50 times back and forth to get a 1000 steps in 😉

8. Take the Scenic Route for School Drop-Off

If your child goes to school, try parking a little farther from the entrance or doing a quick walk after drop-off or before pick-up. It’s a small change, but those extra steps add up over time. 7 minutes away from your normal spot will probably add about a kilometre walk, 14 minutes in total.

9. Walk Alongside Their Bike or Scooter

If your child has a bike, scooter, or roller skates, walk alongside them. This way, you’re moving, they’re entertained, and everyone’s getting some fresh air. Make sure to pick a safe route and enjoy the time together. This one I still do. My kids love getting out & scooting around.

10. Bribery

As I mentioned previously, I now have to sell the walk. An adventure and an ice-cream! There is always a little complaining at the start, and they always enjoy it.

With these simple tweaks, fitting a walk into your day as a solo parent is doable. Try one or mix and match throughout the week to make it work for you. Remember, self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Remember, if you don’t get it done it’s not the end of the world. If it’s a day for a scroll and a cuppa instead, that’s ok x
