Managing Your Energy Over the Festive Season - A Mini Guide to Staying Balanced & Kind
The festive season - it’s magical, chaotic & occasionally, a little overwhelming. The endless social events, family gatherings & always growing to-do lists, it’s easy to feel like you’re running on empty. Then you add in a little dash of being under the weather or managing the world as a neurodivergent person & the season of joy can feel sometimes feel, not so joyful.
The saving grace is that you are not alone, there’s a way to navigate the festive season without burning out.
Whether you’re hosting, toasting or ghosting (social events, that is), I’ve got you covered with some practical, hustle-free & implementable advice.
1. Know Your Energy Levels (and Respect Them)
You’ve got a limited batter - yes, like your phone, but unfortunately, there’s no “low power mode” for humans.
Start your day by checking in with yourself How am I feeling today? If you’re a solid 8/10, great! Plan accordingly. But if you’re hovering around a 3, it’s time to scale back.
Tip - Write a "Must Do" & "Can Skip" list for the season. Prioritize what lights you up & leave the rest.
Remember - it’s okay to say no to Aunt Maggie’s three-hour carol sing-along.
2. Be Kind to Your Body (It’s Doing Its Best)
Feeling sick or run down? Listen to your body. Skip the guilt trip about missing an event - it’s better than showing up, spreading germs & feeling miserable. Rest now so you can enjoy later.
Tip - Schedule buffer days. If you’ve got a big gathering, block off the next day for Netflix, naps, or a little me-time.
3. Low-Key Socializing is Your Best Friend
Not every gathering has to be a full-blown party. Suggest a cozy coffee date or a walk in the park instead of a packed pub crawl. Your neurodivergent friends will thank you (& honestly, so will your introverted ones).
If you’re hosting, make it sensory-friendly
Keep lighting soft.
Offer quiet zones.
Skip the blaring playlist in favour of something mellow (think acoustic holiday tunes, not techno Jingle Bells).
4. Give Grace - to Yourself & Others
Remember that everyone is navigating their own version of festive chaos. Your neurodivergent friend who skips the big family dinner? They’re not being rude - they’re protecting their peace. Give them space & send a kind text instead.
And while you’re at it, give yourself grace too. You don’t have to do it all & you don’t have to do it perfectly.
5. Practical Hacks to Save Your Energy
The holidays don’t have to feel like an Olympic event. Here are some easy energy-saving tips
Shop Smart - Go online or choose gift cards (bonus points if they’re for experiences, not stuff).
Batch Tasks - Wrap presents in one go or prep meals in advance.
Pack a Festive Survival Kit - Include earplugs, snacks & a comforting item for when you’re out.
Plan a Quick Recharge - Step outside for fresh air or sneak in a nap - 10 minutes can work wonders.
A Final Word on the Holidays
The festive season is about connection, not perfection. It’s about finding joy in the little moments, whether that’s watching a cheesy holiday movie with your kids or enjoying five minutes of peace with your favourite candle (like the Calm Candle from Candle Therapy - perfect for a stressed-out mom like me!)
So, let’s promise to be kind - to ourselves, our friends our families. After all, a little grace and understanding go a long way.
