Shake up Your Morning Routine - ADHD or no ADHD
Today, I want to dive into something that's been a HUGE game-changer for me when it comes to managing my ADHD and staying productive, my morning routine.
Seriously, starting my day with a clear plan has been a lifesaver—not just for my focus, but for my mental health, too.
But here’s the thing, I’m switching up my own routine. Yep, I’m shaking things up, and I want to talk about why it’s OK to change your routine, even when it’s working.
Spoiler alert, routines can get boring, and guess what? It’s totally fine to not be consistent all the time. I need things not to be blah when it comes to my morning and when it comes to my ADHD.
Why a Morning Routine Can Change Everything
Setting Priorities - Having a clear morning routine means you don’t waste energy wondering what to do next. You’re already ahead of the game, ready to hit the ground running. This simple structure helps cut out procrastination and keeps you laser-focused on what matters most.
Building Healthy Habits - Mornings are prime real estate for building habits that stick. Whether it’s journaling, getting in a quick workout, or taking a moment to breathe, these small actions add up. Consistency creates long-term success, but remember, the key habit is showing up, not what each ritual contains.
Reducing Stress - A solid routine removes the frantic "What do I do next?" feeling. Starting with structure lets you ease into your day without mental clutter. But let me be real, there will be days where you can’t see the wood from the trees. I have them often. The most important lesson? Learn to let go. If the day doesn’t go as planned, it's OK.
Boosting Productivity - I must admit—I’m definitely more productive when I wake up earlier. But here’s the thing, I still start my workday at the same time no matter when I wake up. It’s not about being a morning person, it’s about giving me a head start.
Elevating Your Mood - A positive start can shift your whole day. Whether it’s enjoying your coffee, reading something inspirational, or just sitting in silence, a morning routine can set the tone for a better mood and more energy throughout the day.
Why I’m Changing My Morning Routine?
So, let’s be honest, even when a routine is working, it can start to feel... well, blah, boring, you know what I mean. You ever feel like you're just going through the motions? Same here. That's why I'm changing things up.
Lately, I’ve noticed my mornings have gotten too screen-heavy. Anyone following me might’ve noticed I’ve been posting less in the morning. That’s because I’ve been trying to limit my screen time—no more beach photos, because, well, I haven’t had my phone with me!
Also, with autumn in the air, I’m adjusting my routine to fit the season. Instead of my usual 7:15 a.m. walk after my class, I’ll wait for more daylight. I might even be, BIG GASP social and go for an evening walk with a friend once a week!
Why Switching Up Your Routine Is Good for You?
Keep It Fresh - Even when a routine works, it can feel like autopilot after a while. Changing things up removes the blah factor. And let’s face it—if you have ADHD, you know how much we hate the monotony.
Align with Your Goals - Your routine should reflect where you are in life. Maybe your goals have shifted, or you’ve developed new interests. That’s OK! Let your routine evolve with you.
Improve Your Mental Health - Trying something new forces you to be more mindful. I know that brighter walks will help me feel better, so I’m making that change. It’s a small tweak, but it makes a big difference.
Spark Creativity - Switching up your routine can refresh your mind. Even a slight change can lead to new ideas and better problem-solving. It’s like hitting the "refresh" button on your brain.
How to Start—or Tweak—Your Own Morning Routine?
Start Small - You don’t need to overhaul your entire morning at once. Pick one or two things to add or switch up and go from there.
Make It Your - Your routine should be something you enjoy, not dread. Find what makes you feel good, whether that’s stretching, meditating, or savouring a quiet moment with your coffee.
Stay Flexible - Don’t be afraid to switch things up if your routine feels stale. Life changes, and your routine should adapt to match where you are.
